Celebrex and other NSAIDs are known to be less effective in relieving pain and inflammation than other NSAIDs. This may be due to increased production of prostaglandin, decreased mucus secretion or increased levels of sodium and water in the body. Patients should be warned that some NSAIDs may cause gastrointestinal irritation and should tell their doctor if they have any unusual or persistent symptoms. Inform your doctor immediately if you notice black, tarry stools, vomit that looks like coffee grounds, stomach pain, pain while passing urine or having difficulty breathing. The most common side effects of NSAIDs include diarrhea, abdominal pain, upper respiratory tract infection, bleeding or ulcers, and kidney function abnormalities. Tell your doctor if you notice yellow or dark urine, pale stools, or abdominal pain.NSAIDs may interfere with the effectiveness of the NSAID. Celecoxib and other NSAIDs are known to cause decreased blood flow to the colon, possibly leading to bleeding.
AstraZeneca is not the first company to market a generic drug with the name Celebrex.
The company’s annual sales are up 1.7% compared to last year, with the number of prescriptions written by patients increasing to 646,000.
For example, a company called Merck & Co. will manufacture a Celebrex brand in six countries, including the United States, Germany, France, Sweden, and Canada.
The Celebrex Cele MDL has a $8.7 billion valuation for this year, according to a research firm that monitors pharmaceutical sales in the United States.
“I can’t imagine this year without Celebrex, and I don’t think anyone in the industry can imagine that,” said Dr. Michaelilantro, a clinical pharmacist at UC San Diego.
Merck’s Celebrex and its generic version, Pfizer’s Vioxx, are in the same category. The two products are used to treat arthritis, the joint disease in which arthritis can cause arthritis pain. But Celebrex and Vioxx are considered interchangeable.
“We’ve just launched Vioxx, which is a brand that’s been around since 1974, and we’ve had the experience of seeing that we have a different formulation of Vioxx,” said Dr. James H. Leavitt, a co-senior author of the study.
Celebrex will be sold as a generic version of Celebrex in the US, but the company does not expect to start marketing a generic version of Vioxx later in 2016. That will likely be in a year or two, as Vioxx is the world’s biggest-selling drug.
“There’s a lot of hype around Celebrex, and we’ve been trying to make Celebrex as effective as possible for treating people, but we have no plans to do that,” said H. R. Lee, president and chief executive officer of the pharmaceutical company. “We’re in the process of launching Vioxx for Vioxx for Vioxx for Vioxx, and we have a very clear plan.”
While Vioxx is a much more expensive drug, the Celebrex drug has the same potential of being more effective than Vioxx and has a similar price.
Vioxx will be marketed by AstraZeneca, which owns the patent on Celebrex, and Merck & Co., which is the US subsidiary that manufactures the drug.
AstraZeneca, which is the parent company, estimates that Vioxx sales will double to $4.5 billion by 2016.
The pharmaceutical market for pharmaceuticals is very large. A recent survey from the National Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association found that nearly 30 million people use drugs in the United States alone. That number is expected to double by 2016.
“The pharma industry is a complicated place, but when people ask us, ‘Do you know how much you’re spending on research and development?’ we have that as a question,” said Michaelilantro. “This is where we can really see the growth and the market is very large.”
Merck’s Celebrex is the world’s largest generic company, with $8.7 billion in revenue last year, according to a study released by the company last month.
Merck, which was founded in 1989, also developed the drug from 2001. It is based in Merck’s San Diego, where it has been the biggest selling generic drug maker in the country.
“I don’t know if I’m going to be on Celebrex for the rest of my life,” said Lee. “But I do know that Celebrex is going to be the most important medication in the world.”
The research firm is currently exploring the possibility of competing with Merck’s Vioxx. The drug is not expected to hit the market by 2016.
AstraZeneca’s Celebrex, which was launched in the United States in 1974, and Vioxx (the active ingredient in Vioxx) in the UK in 1993, will be the world’s biggest-selling drug in 2016.The company is not the first company to market a generic drug with the name Celebrex.
